L' Aviarium è un testo allegorico destinato a un uditorio di conversi. Il materiale è tratto dalla Bibbia, dai Padri della Chiesa e dalle enciclopedie medievali ed è interpretato in maniera personale. Nell'introduzione l'ed. fornisce notizie sull'autore e analizza i manoscritti. Cette édition de l'exposé allégorique du monde des oiseaux, rédigé vers 1130-1140 par le chanoine de Saint-Augustin Hugues de Fouilloy remplace définitivement le texte imprimé à tort parmi les ouvres de Hughes de Saint-Victor dans PL 177. Ce texte est important pour la symbolique animalière et l'iconographie médiévales. On compte 55 mss illustrés, plus stables que ceux sans illustrations. Le plus proche de l'original perdu semble être le ms. Heiligenkreuz, Stiftsbibl., 226 (France, fin XIIe s.). Six autres ont été utilisés pour l'édition: Aberdeen, UL, 24; Bruges, Sém., 89/54; Bruxelles, BR, 18421; Lisboa, Arq. Nac. Torre do Tombo, 90; Paris, BNF, lat. 2495B; Troyes, BM, 177. B. Van den Abeele, in «Scriptorium» 48 (1994) 63, ajoute un titre bibliographique et signale que le ms. Bruxelles, BR, 3241 doit être rayé de la liste des mss, alors qu'il faut ajouter le ms. fragmentaire, BR, 531-39 du XVe s. Il primo fascicolo contiene un'introduzione di L.F. Sandler, la trascrizione e la traduzione in inglese a cura di C. De Hamel e la traduzione in tedesco a cura di H. Zotter, nonché la riproduzione in bianco e nero del ciclo completo delle miniature. Nel secondo fascicolo, dopo una descrizione codicologica, il commento di L.F. Sandler offre una riflessione sulla tradizione dei bestiari, con particolare riguardo alla produzione inglese degli inizi del sec. XIV, alle fonti testuali delle miniature e a confronti iconografici con altri testimoni inglesi. Datazione proposta: primo decennio del sec. XIV. In un saggio finale, C. De Hamel suggerisce che il codice sia appartenuto ai monaci di Peterborough.
